"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of a people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The National Guard should have been the "Militia". We have no business sending the National Guard all over the world to fight other people's fights. The National Guard should be contained within the fifty states and used only in time of dire emergency to protect and defend the citizens of the United States within our own borders.
News flash: We've been infringing on the right of a people to keep and bear Arms ever since World War I. And it is a good thing that we've been doing so, because people should not be able to arm their own airplanes, they should not carry machine guns around town, and they should not play with atomic weapons. On the other hand, people should have as many single shot muskets as they would like.
You see, we have been drawing a line beyond which our citizens should not go ever since "Arms" began becoming more powerful and automated. The musket was the standard for 1776. Today we even allow semi automatic weapons. It is time for rational people, capable of using logic and reason, to sit down to discuss drawing a new line to prevent mentally ill and seriously evil people from obtaining powerful weapons to kill our citizens. A civilized, moral society has an obligation to protect its citizens from surprise attack from which they cannot defend themselves because of the overwhelming firepower which is available to not so innocent individuals.
For those who still dream of fighting off some totalitarian government: grow up; if such a government did exist, it would just drop a bomb on your head and... game over. You've been watching too many movies and playing too many video games. The way for Americans to defend against a totalitarian government is by being informed and involved citizens. So get busy and start thinking of all Americans and not just your survivalist buddies!
